A hazardous material incident is an event in which a fire, spill, dispersion, or leak of a hazardous material occurs, which can occur in several situations:
- Due to an operational malfunction in the factories, during routine operations.
- War (missile strike) or hostile terrorist activity.
- During an earthquake/tsunami wave.
- Transportation or storage of chemical products.
At a hazardous materials incident – isolation saves lives
You must listen to and act according to the instructions published in the media and according to the announcements of the emergency forces and the municipality .
Behavior in the event of a leak of hazardous materials in or near a structure :
- Those outside the building – immediately enter the closest available enclosed space.
- In the enclosed space – immediately close the windows and exterior doors in the apartment, turn off air conditioners , close and turn off heating and cooking stoves, close all types of ventilation openings and water and gas taps.
- You can use a wet rag to place in the door openings.
- It is recommended not to heat the room and it is strictly forbidden to light a fire or smoke inside it.
Rules of conduct for car passengers
- Immediately close the doors, windows, and vents (including air conditioning).
- Drive carefully away from the area, following the routes that will be detailed in the media.
If symptoms of exposure to a hazardous substance appear
- Such as nausea, headaches, shortness of breath, skin burns, or irritation in the nose and eyes – the irritated organ should be washed with water.
- You must report/contact medical authorities from MDA/health insurance companies/hospitals.
At the end of the event, ventilate the house well .
During a hazardous materials incident – the required response :
- Locking up and turning off air conditioners .
- Those staying outside will enter an interior room in a nearby building .
- In any case, staying inside a building is preferable to staying outside .
